White Me Empty by Elana Katz

The white make-up used in this piece is the traditional Japanese make-up of the Kabuki Theater and the Geisha. All materials were purchased in Japan for the originally scheduled performance. The glass of the windows is painted with theatrical white face make-up: the window is thus treated as a face. The uncovered face of the artist is used to remove the white make-up from the window: the face is thus treated as a tool. The artist takes one photograph of herself after each round of withdrawing paint from the window – documenting as the face as tool removes, transfers, absorbs the white material, onto the body of the artist.
